Bit Discovery

Sales collateral for an attack surface management platform.

Bit Discovery kept a running map of the public internet and showed companies which parts of it were theirs (and out of those, which were vulnerable). We helped communicate that message into sales conversations.

The problem

A company can only secure what it knows it owns, and most simply don't have that as a list. Forgotten servers, old campaign pages and third-party tools sit outside the inventory and become the way in for bad actors.

Bit Discovery not only maps every internet-facing asset a company owns, they watch them for changes -- helping companies secure assets before they become expensive lessons.

And it's a complicated platform, with lots of moving parts. Parts that Hawaii-based Moonlight Labs brought us on to explain in Bit Discovery's marketing collateral.

A city at night from above, printed in two inks, under the line: You can only protect what you know you own.
A Bit Discovery alert over a desk at night: Attack surface changed. New server online. Port 8080 open.

Data sheets, specs, and white papers

We wrote and helped with the design of data sheets, spec sheets, and white papers. Each document built on real experiences from account executives, covering the problem, solution, and proof.

Instead of a hard sales pitch, we let the size and depth of the platform make the case.

Over 150 filters, grouped into categories such as Security, Networking, Whois and Web Applications
A forgotten record, promo-2016.example.com, and three questions: why does this asset exist, who is responsible for it, how does it relate to other assets

Minutes, not days

In addition to sales collateral, we also wrote case studies for Bit Discovery, including covering its work for one of the world's largest social networks that could not be named.

We made sure the case holds up and accurately presents the impressive work -- even without that recognizable logo. We also applied this to use cases presented on the company website.

One redacted company domain, 20,000 assets, 90% discovered in minutes
The customer case study page with the customer redacted, a pull quote, and 75%, 1,500 and 100% results
The mergers and acquisitions solutions page, covering asset discovery before, during and after a deal

Communicating development

Bit Discovery was in active development and we had to convey this work through regular feature guides, technical changelogs, and release documentation.

We also had to convey the growth of the platform to its sales team -- something we did using battle cards.

Battle card comparing Bit Discovery with crawler-based discovery: the pitch, the gaps, objections and questions to ask
Release notes for version 3.8.0, grouped into New, Improved and API
Technical docs for the HTML contains filter, with a GDPR cookie example query and its results

Acquired by Tenable

In 2022, Tenable acquired Bit Discovery for $44.5 million, and the platform became Tenable Attack Surface Management. Congratulations to the Bit Discovery team; we're proud to have been part of the story and look forward to what they build next.
